Description
Domaine Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux is a sweet Chenin Blanc from the walled vineyard whose enclosed microclimate makes it the estate’s most dependable source of botrytis.
Vouvray sits on the right bank of the Loire east of Tours, where Chenin Blanc is planted on tuffeau limestone under a thin cap of clay and flint, and is made across the full range from dry to richly sweet depending on the season. Domaine Huet, founded at Vouvray in 1928, works three sites, of which the six-hectare Clos du Bourg on the plateau above the town is the most consistently generous. Its enclosing walls hold a more humid microclimate, so this is the vineyard that most often gives fruit affected by botrytis or by passerillage, the shrivelling of grapes left on the vine. The moelleux is made only when the season allows it. This bottling finished at 56 grams per litre of residual sugar, carried by the smoky, saline cut and the tension in the finish that the Clos is known for.
Ready now but capable of decades in bottle, and the firm acidity points to savoury matches rather than dessert. Serve at 8-10°C with slow-cooked lamb, a mild curry or well-matured Comté.
