Description
Domaine Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec is a dry Chenin Blanc from a monopole with barely a metre of topsoil over solid limestone.
Vouvray occupies the right bank of the Loire just east of Tours, where Chenin Blanc grows over tuffeau, the soft limestone the region's cellars are dug into. Clos du Bourg is perched on the Première Côte directly above the town and is farmed exclusively by Huet, who took it on in 1953 and purchased it a decade later. Of the domaine's three sites it is generally held to be the greatest, and among the most serious white-wine vineyards in France. With only a metre of soil above the rock, the vines reach the limestone almost at once, and the combination of a warm, sheltered exposure with that mineral base produces wines that are both concentrated and extremely long-lived — powerful without losing the cut that defines dry Vouvray.
Tightly wound on release; give it three or four years, and expect it to run far longer. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, grilled fish or a mature goat's cheese.
