Description
Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec comes from the estate's founding vineyard, the deep aubuis clay of the Première Côte.
Vouvray is Chenin Blanc country on the right bank of the Loire east of Tours, and Domaine Huet, established in 1928, is its most celebrated address, bottling three single vineyards in dry, demi-sec and moelleux styles according to what each season gives. Le Haut-Lieu was the estate's first vineyard, purchased in that founding year, and sits on the Première Côte. It is a nine-hectare plot on deep, brown, chalky clay known locally as aubuis, where the yellow tuffeau limestone bedrock lies as much as four metres down. That richer soil produces round, supple wines that drink well young, and Le Haut-Lieu is generally the earliest maturing of the three cuvées and usually the first ready. Longevity is not sacrificed for it, though: like the Clos du Bourg and Le Mont, these wines can be extremely long-lived, and bottles from the 1940s are still drinking well.
Fine now and capable of decades in the cellar. Serve at 10-12°C with pork rillettes, roast chicken or a mildly spiced curry.
