Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux 2020

Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux is a sweet Chenin Blanc from the vineyard that founded the estate in 1928.

Vouvray lies on the right bank of the Loire east of Tours, and in favourable autumns its Chenin Blanc is picked in successive passes for sweet wines labelled moelleux. Le Haut-Lieu was Huet's first vineyard, bought in 1928, and sits on the Première Côte, a nine-hectare plot of deep brown chalky clay known locally as aubuis. Here the yellow tuffeau limestone bedrock lies as much as four metres below the surface, so the soil is richer than at the domaine's other sites and gives rounder, suppler wines. It generally matures earliest of the three cuvées and is the first ready to drink, though that says nothing about its longevity: like Clos du Bourg and Le Mont, these wines can run for decades, and bottles from the 1940s remain in good order.

Lovely young and effectively indestructible in a decent cellar. Serve at 8-10°C with foie gras, a pear tart or blue cheese.
