Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec 2021

Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec comes from the estate’s first vineyard, bought in 1928, and is the roundest and earliest-maturing of its three Vouvray sites.

Vouvray lies on the north bank of the Loire east of Tours, and the Première Côte is the ridge of limestone hillside carrying its finest vineyards. Le Haut-Lieu is a nine-hectare plot there on deep, brown, chalky clay known locally as aubuis, where the yellow tuffeau bedrock can lie as much as four metres down. That deeper, richer soil is what sets it apart from Le Mont and Clos du Bourg: it produces round, supple wines that drink well young and are usually the first of the three cuvées to be ready. That is a question of when rather than whether, since like its siblings Le Haut-Lieu can last for decades, and bottles from the 1940s still show well. Huet’s sec bottlings carry between 4 and 8 g/L residual sugar depending on the season.

Approachable on release and capable of twenty years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, pork rillettes or a soft goat’s cheese.
