Description
Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Mont Demi-Sec is an off-dry Chenin Blanc from a vineyard recorded as one of Vouvray’s finest sites since the fifteenth century.
Le Mont was known locally as Perruches, the name given to the greenish clay soils flecked with perrons, the fist-sized flints that litter the slope. Domaine Huet bought the steep, rocky eight-hectare vineyard in 1957. It lies on the Première Côte, the bank of limestone-rich hillside above Tours, and its argilo-siliceux soils — stony, with green mineral clay and flint over limestone — give the tight structure and stony grip Le Mont is known for. With less clay and more stone than Le Haut-Lieu, the site produces the nerviest wines of the estate, so it is used mainly for dry and off-dry cuvées. Huet’s demi-secs generally finish between 18 and 25 grams per litre of residual sugar, but the acidity is such that they read as barely off-dry, precise and clear-cut yet welcoming at the table.
Fine to open now and steady in bottle for twenty years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with Thai or Vietnamese dishes, roast pork belly or a mild washed-rind cheese.
