Domaine Jaeger Defaix Rully 1er Cru Clos du Chapître Rouge 2023

Domaine Jaeger Defaix Rully 1er Cru Clos du Chapître Rouge comes from a walled one-hectare monopole directly behind the family's house and cellars.

Rully lies at the northern end of the Côte Chalonnaise and is better known for white wine, though its premiers crus on clay-limestone produce serious Pinot Noir. Clos du Chapître is a one-hectare monopole within the larger premier cru of Chapître, enclosed by a two-metre stone wall and sitting immediately behind the domaine's house and cellars. Yields are held down by severe pruning, disbudding and a green harvest, and bunches are sorted by hand so that only the best clusters are kept. The wine was aged twelve months in oak barrels, ten per cent of them new, then settled in tank before bottling under a Diam closure. Jancis Robinson MW has written that wines from this site prove the Côte Chalonnaise can field bottles of serious interest to those raised on the Côte d'Or. It shows a clear step up from the village Rully in depth and structure.

Drinking now and capable of eight to ten years in the cellar. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, coq au vin or a washed-rind cheese.
