Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge 'Farconnet' 2021

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge 'Farconnet' is a Syrah grown on the granite hill of Hermitage, from a family that has tended vines there since 1481.

Hermitage is a single steep hill rising above the town of Tain-l'Hermitage on the left bank of the Rhône, one of the smallest and most storied red wine appellations in France at little more than 130 hectares. The slope faces due south, and its granite bedrock, weathered to sand and covered in places by loess and clay, gives Syrah a structure found nowhere else in the northern Rhône. Farconnet is bottled under the J.L. Chave Selection label, the négociant house the family established alongside the domaine, which buys fruit and wine from growers on the hill and raises it in the family cellars at Mauves.

It suits slow-cooked beef, game or a hard alpine cheese, and it rewards a decade or more in a cool cellar.
