Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Selection Crozes-Hermitage Rouge Silène is a northern Rhône Syrah from the appellation that surrounds the hill of Hermitage.

Crozes-Hermitage is the largest of the northern Rhône appellations, taking in eleven communes around Tain-l'Hermitage. The northern sector near Gervans and Larnage sits on granite and clay slopes, while the broader southern part runs across old alluvial terraces of round stones left by the Rhône and the Isère. Syrah is the only red grape permitted. J.L. Chave Selection is the négociant house Jean-Louis Chave runs from the family base at Mauves, sourcing from growers across the northern Rhône and raising the wines in his own cellars, in a style that has always favoured drinkability over weight. The appellation was created in 1937 and enlarged in the following decades, and it now accounts for the bulk of northern Rhône production.

It goes well with grilled lamb, charcuterie or a peppery beef dish, and is best served a touch below room temperature.
