Description
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Selection Hermitage Blanc 'Blanche' is a Marsanne and Roussanne white from the granite hill of Hermitage.
White Hermitage is one of the great rarities of France, made from Marsanne with a little Roussanne on a hill of barely more than 130 hectares, most of it planted to Syrah. The white sites sit largely on the western and central parts of the slope, around Rocoules, L'Hermite and Maison Blanche, where clay and loess over granite suit Marsanne particularly well. Wines from here are famously slow to unwind and were historically cellared as long as the reds. Blanche is bottled under the J.L. Chave Selection label, the négociant house run by Jean-Louis Chave from the family cellars at Mauves.
Best served at around 12 degrees with scallops, poultry in a cream sauce or a mature hard cheese, and it is worth keeping, as white Hermitage often improves for a decade and more.
