Description
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Selection Saint-Joseph Rouge Offerus is a granite-grown northern Rhône Syrah, and the benchmark by which many drinkers judge affordable Saint-Joseph.
Saint-Joseph stretches roughly 50 kilometres along the right bank of the Rhône, a narrow band of terraced granite slopes facing east across the river, where Syrah is the only red grape allowed. The appellation's historic core lies around Mauves, Tournon and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, where the Chave family has its cellars and where Jean-Louis Chave has worked to bring abandoned terraces back into production. Offerus is the Saint-Joseph of J.L. Chave Selection, the négociant house he founded alongside the domaine, made from fruit and young wine bought from growers and then raised in the family cellars. The appellation was created in 1956 and takes its name from a hillside site above Tournon long associated with the Jesuits.
It is a natural match for grilled lamb, sausages or roast duck, and it repays decanting; it drinks well young but holds for several years.
