Description
Domaine Jean-Marc et Thomas Bouley Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens Hauts is a premier cru red Burgundy from the upper half of Pommard's most famous vineyard.
Les Rugiens takes its name from the reddish, iron-rich soil of the slope, and it is split in two: Rugiens-Bas, lower down, is the parcel most often put forward for promotion to grand cru, while Rugiens-Hauts sits above it on thinner, stonier ground over limestone. Both are planted to Pinot Noir, the only red grape of the Côte d'Or, and Pommard makes no white wine at all. The Bouley family works vineyards in Pommard and Volnay from its base in Volnay, where Thomas Bouley now makes the wines with his father Jean-Marc. Les Rugiens sits at the southern end of the commune, on the side that faces towards Volnay.
It is a wine for braised beef, game or a mature hard cheese, and it will usually reward a decade in a cool cellar.
