Description
Domaine Jean-Marc et Thomas Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is a premier cru red Burgundy from the vineyard many consider the finest in the village.
Les Caillerets lies mid-slope on the Meursault side of Volnay, and its name comes from the cailloux, the stones that litter a shallow soil over fractured limestone. Along with Clos des Chênes it is generally placed at the head of the commune, and in an appellation with no grand cru it stands as the benchmark for what Volnay can do with Pinot Noir. The upper section, Caillerets Dessus, is the most highly regarded part. The Bouley family has worked vineyards in Volnay for generations, and Thomas Bouley now makes the wines with his father Jean-Marc. The premiers crus cover a large share of Volnay's vineyard, a good deal more than its village land.
It is worth eight to fifteen years in a cool cellar and suits roast duck, game birds or a soft washed-rind cheese.
