Description
Domaine Jean-Marc et Thomas Bouley Volnay is a red Burgundy from the Côte de Beaune village that has long been a byword for finesse.
Volnay lies between Pommard and Meursault on the Côte de Beaune and makes red wine only, from Pinot Noir. It has no grand cru but around thirty premiers crus, and its reputation for perfume and lift rather than sheer power reaches back to the dukes of Burgundy, who held land and a residence in the village. Limestone runs through the slope, with thin stony soils high up and deeper, heavier ground towards the road. The Bouley family has farmed here for generations, and Thomas Bouley now makes the wines with his father Jean-Marc, working across a range of Volnay and Pommard parcels.
It suits roast poultry, duck, mushroom dishes or a soft washed-rind cheese, and it is generally at its best from about five years after the vintage.
