Description
Domaine Lamy-Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Morgeot Blanc comes from the largest and most famous premier cru of a village that shares the Montrachet name.
Morgeot occupies a broad sweep of the southern half of Chassagne-Montrachet, and it is less a single climat than a group of them, since a number of named parcels within its boundaries may be sold under the Morgeot name. The soils are heavier and richer in marl than the lighter, stonier ground further north towards Puligny, which is why the Chardonnay grown here has long been regarded as the broadest shouldered of the commune. Chassagne was as much a red wine village as a white one until the middle of the twentieth century, when Chardonnay steadily took over its better slopes. Barrel fermentation and ageing on lees are the norm.
Serve at 12 to 13C with roast chicken, lobster, veal in cream or a mature hard cheese; it is worth giving a few years in the cellar.
