Description
Domaine Lamy-Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Morgeot Rouge is a reminder that this famous white wine village was once known chiefly for its reds.
Until the middle of the twentieth century Chassagne-Montrachet planted a great deal of Pinot Noir, and its reds were the everyday face of the commune while the whites were the rarity. That balance has since reversed almost completely, which makes red Morgeot an increasingly uncommon wine. Morgeot itself is the largest premier cru of the village, a wide expanse in the southern half of the commune on marl-rich soils that give more weight than the stonier ground to the north. The wine is fermented in open vats and raised in oak barrels, and it sits stylistically closer to neighbouring Santenay than to the Cote de Nuits.
Serve at about 16C with duck, game birds, mushroom dishes or roast lamb; it will keep for a decade in a good cellar.
