Description
Domaine Merlin Bourgogne Rouge is a red Burgundy from a Maconnais domaine far better known for its whites, which is part of its appeal.
Olivier Merlin and his wife Corinne arrived at La Roche Vineuse in 1987, taking on a run down property and rebuilding it into one of the reference estates of the Maconnais; their son Theo now works alongside them. The Maconnais is overwhelmingly Chardonnay country, so Pinot Noir here is planted in pockets, usually on the cooler, limestone rich sites that suit it. The regional Bourgogne appellation covers the whole of the region and sets the grape, Pinot Noir, but leaves everything else to the grower, which is why the name on the label matters more than the name of the appellation. The fruit is fermented with a proportion of whole bunches and extraction is kept gentle, with the wine raised in used barrels so that the oak stays in the background.
Serve it lightly chilled, at about 15 degrees, with charcuterie, roast pork, mushroom dishes or a simple roast chicken.
