Domaine Moreau-Naudet Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Domaine Moreau-Naudet Chablis 1er Cru Montmains is a premier cru Chablis made entirely without oak, from vines averaging seventy years of age, bottled here in magnum.

Montmains sits on the flank of the Valvan valley opposite Vaillons, on the left bank of the Serein. Its deep bleu d’argile, the local blue clay, is shot through with limestone rock, and the combination tends to give textbook Chablis: mineral, taut and long rather than broad. The domaine, run by Virginie Moreau at Chablis, works 0.65 hectares across the lieux-dits Les Monts Mains, Les Bouts des Butteaux and Vaux Miolot. The last of those lies on deeper clay, is difficult to work, and brings additional flesh and texture to the blend. For this release the wine was fermented and aged without any oak at all, a decision made to keep freshness to the fore, so the depth of the site reaches the glass unmediated. The result is balanced and persistent, with the length the cru is known for. Magnum format.

Drinking well now and worth holding for six to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C alongside oysters, seared scallops or a young goat’s cheese.
