Domaine Moreau-Naudet Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 2019

Montmains is a 1.6-hectare holding in the long left-bank premier cru that runs south-west from the town of Chablis along the Breuil valley.

Its slopes face south-east, taking the morning sun, and the soil is Kimmeridgian marl with a shallow, stony covering that drains fast, giving a leaner and more tightly wound wine than the grands crus across the river, with the appellation's characteristic saline finish. The domaine dates from 1950 and the marriage of Marie Naudet and René Moreau. Stéphane Moreau, who took it on from his father Roger in 1993, expanded it from seven hectares to around twenty-five before his death in 2016; his widow Virginie leads it today, with their daughter Nelle now involved. The vineyards are farmed organically, ploughed several times a year and picked by hand, with the aim of full ripeness. Fermentation runs on indigenous yeasts and the wine is kept on its lees for eighteen to twenty-two months, roughly a third in used, steamed barrels and the remainder in tank, with minimal sulphur.

Good from release and better after two or three years; serve at 10-12°C with oysters, grilled white fish or a plate of charcuterie.
