Domaine Moreau-Naudet Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 2023

Domaine Moreau-Naudet Chablis 1er Cru Montmains is a premier cru Chablis raised without any oak, from parcels of seventy-year-old vines.

Montmains lies on the left bank of the Serein, on the flank of the Valvan valley opposite Vaillons. The soil here is deep bleu d’argile, the blue clay of the district, with a good deal of loose limestone rock through it, and the cru has a reputation for textbook Chablis: mineral, driven and long. Moreau-Naudet, the Chablis domaine now in the hands of Virginie Moreau, farms 0.65 hectares split between the lieux-dits Les Monts Mains, Les Bouts des Butteaux and Vaux Miolot. Vaux Miolot sits on deeper clay, is awkward to work, and contributes flesh and texture to the finished blend. This release was fermented and aged with no oak whatsoever, a choice made to protect freshness, and the wine carries the depth of the site while staying taut and balanced through a long finish.

Drinking now and good for six to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with oysters, seared scallops or grilled flathead.
