Domaine Moreau-Naudet Petit Chablis 2022

Moreau-Naudet's Petit Chablis comes from a single site on Kimmeridgian soils rather than the Portlandian limestone most of the appellation sits on.

Petit Chablis covers the outer plateaux of the Chablis vineyard, where the younger Portlandian limestone generally gives a lighter, more direct wine than Chablis proper. This bottling is the exception that proves the point. The 2.5-hectare parcel lies between Courgis and Beine, just outside Chablis on the road to Auxerre, with a south-westerly orientation and Kimmeridgian soils. Half the plot carries vines of 25 to 30 years, the remainder 45 to 50. The wine ferments spontaneously in large vats of 32 to 100 hectolitres, with no oak involved, and is bottled under Diam closure. The result has more gravitas and detail than the appellation usually offers, with a seamless palate, chalky nuance and a genuinely long, saline finish.

Drinking well now and over the next three or four years; serve at 10 to 12°C with oysters, grilled whiting or a plate of prawns.
