Domaine Moreau-Naudet Petit Chablis 2023

Domaine Moreau-Naudet Petit Chablis is grown on Kimmeridgian soils rather than the higher Portlandian plateau where most Petit Chablis is planted.

Petit Chablis is the entry-level appellation of the district, usually grown on the Portlandian limestone of the plateau above the classified slopes, which is why the wines are typically brisk and slight. This bottling is an exception. It comes from a single 2.5-hectare site between Courgis and Beine, just outside Chablis on the road to Auxerre, facing south-west and sitting on Kimmeridgian soils, the same formation that underpins the premiers and grands crus. Half the plot carries vines of twenty-five to thirty years, the other half vines of forty-five to fifty. The wine ferments spontaneously in large vats of thirty-two to a hundred hectolitres, with no oak involved at any stage, and the farming is organic. The combination of mature vines and a better site than the appellation usually gets gives the wine real substance. It is bottled under a Diam closure.

Ready on release and good over three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with oysters, grilled sardines or a fresh goat's cheese.
