Description

Moreau-Naudet's Petit Chablis is unusual for the appellation in coming from Kimmeridgian soils rather than the higher Portlandian ground.

Petit Chablis sits at the base of the Chablis hierarchy and normally comes from the plateaux above the main slopes, on younger Portlandian limestone. This wine comes instead from a single 2.5-hectare site called La Grosse Cour, between Courgis and Beine on the road out of Chablis towards Auxerre, with a south-westerly aspect and Kimmeridgian soils — the same marl and fossilised oyster shell that underpins the Premiers and Grands Crus. Half the plot carries vines of 25 to 30 years, the other half 45 to 50 years, and the farming is organic. The wine fermented spontaneously in large vats of 32 to 100 hectolitres, with no oak. Vine age and careful farming give it a gravitas and charisma that Petit Chablis rarely shows. It is sealed under Diam.

Drink over the next three or four years. Serve at 10 to 12°C with oysters, whitebait or a fresh goat's cheese.
