Description
La Grande Montagne is a Chassagne-Montrachet premier cru from one of the highest sites in the commune, where Paul Pillot farms just 0.26 hectares.
The vineyard sits as a kind of island high on the slope, above Les Grandes Ruchottes and at much the same altitude as La Romanée. It lies on the sweeping band of rocky terres blanches that runs north towards the grand cru vineyards, and there is barely any topsoil: Thierry Pillot describes the vines, now more than 30 years old, as planted directly on the rock. Of all the Chassagne terroirs, this is the one that leans closest to Puligny in style, with floral aromatics and a taut, cool structure rather than breadth. The domaine's handling is deliberately restrained, keeping the site's citrus drive and fine-boned frame intact while the small crop gives concentration and considerable length.
Best from three years and capable of a decade in a good cellar; serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast poultry or shellfish in butter.
*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
