Description
Les Champs-Gains is a Chassagne-Montrachet premier cru close to the village, lying just under En Cailleret.
The premiers crus of Chassagne occupy the mid-slope band where limestone and clay meet, and each behaves differently. Pillot notes that Les Champs-Gains is less stony than his parcel in Les Mazures, with a deeper clay profile that brings genuine depth and texture; the vines here are around 45 years old. Because clay can push ripeness, he always picks early in this vineyard to keep the tension that balances the fruit weight. Winemaking follows the domaine's usual pattern: hand harvest, whole-bunch pressing, natural fermentation and maturation on lees in barrel with a restrained proportion of new oak. The wine shows fresh yellow fruit and good energy on a broader frame than the village bottlings, closing long and with grip.
Give it three to five years, and expect it to hold well beyond that; serve at 10-12°C with turbot, lobster or poached chicken.
