Description
Les Mazures is a single 0.63-hectare village parcel in Chassagne-Montrachet, sitting directly beneath the premier cru Les Champs Gains.
Chassagne-Montrachet runs along the southern end of the Côte de Beaune and is the largest of the great white-wine communes of the Côte d'Or. Village-level sites vary widely here, and Les Mazures is among the better ones: rocky, limestone-rich soil, a southeast aspect and a position immediately below premier cru land on the slope. The Pillot family has farmed in Chassagne for generations and Thierry Pillot now makes the wines. Fruit is hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, fermented with the vineyard's own yeasts and matured on lees in barrel, with new oak kept to a minimum so the site speaks. The wine has the classy, textural quality the parcel is known for, and the tension that comes with stony ground.
Best given two or three years and good for a decade; serve at 10-12°C with scallops, roast chicken or a firm goat's cheese.
