Domaine Pichot Vouvray Moelleux Le Marigny 2020

Domaine Pichot Vouvray Moelleux Le Marigny is a sweet Chenin Blanc from the hillside above the town of Vouvray, bottled with around 70 grams per litre of residual sugar.

Vouvray lies on the north bank of the Loire just east of Tours, where Chenin Blanc is planted on shallow clay and flint over the soft limestone tuffeau that the region's cellars are cut into. The same grape gives everything from bone dry to lusciously sweet wine here, the style decided each year by ripeness and by how much noble rot the autumn allows. Domaine Pichot farms across Vouvray and Chancay and works its vineyards organically. Le Marigny is the estate's moelleux cuvee, picked in successive passes through the rows so that only sufficiently ripe bunches are taken, pressed slowly and fermented in tank, with the ferment stopping naturally while about 70 grams per litre of the grapes' own sugar remains.

Sweet but firmly acidic rather than cloying, it suits foie gras, blue-veined cheese and fruit tarts, and will also carry roast pork or lightly spiced Asian dishes; serve at around 10 degrees.
