Description
Pierre Gaillard's Condrieu draws on four parcels spread along the terraced granite slopes of the northern Rhône.
Condrieu is planted entirely to Viognier on steep terraces above the right bank of the river, and the appellation's soils of fine, decomposing granite, known locally as arzelle, run through all four of Gaillard's sites: Côte Bellay, Les Patasses at Malleval, Boissey at Chavanay and La Caille at Condrieu itself. The vines yielded 30 hectolitres per hectare in this vintage, and the wine spent seven months in oak, of which ten per cent was new. What marks out Gaillard's whites is the way they carry intense aromatics and a ripe, hedonistic texture without losing mineral refreshment. This one is suave and slippery in texture, with downy peach, potpourri and jasmine, a gingery spice note and a stony freshness holding it all in balance.
Best drunk within three or four years while the aromatics are at their peak; serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, apricot-glazed chicken or a mild soft cheese.
