Domaine Pierre Gaillard Condrieu 2021

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Condrieu is drawn from four terraced parcels of decomposing granite across the appellation and its neighbouring communes.

Condrieu is the northern Rhône's Viognier appellation, a narrow band of hand-worked terraces on the right bank south of Côte-Rôtie, where the soil is fine, decomposing granite known as arzelle. Domaine Pierre Gaillard is based at Malleval and draws this wine from four parcels: Côte Bellay, Les Patasses at Malleval, Boissey at Chavanay and La Caille in Condrieu itself, each on that same granitic ground. Yields here ran to 30 hectolitres per hectare, and the wine spent seven months in oak, of which 10 per cent was new, so the wood supports the texture without dominating. What marks Gaillard's whites is the way they combine intense aromatics and a ripe, hedonistic palate with real mineral refreshment, and at 13.5 per cent alcohol this is a lighter, more balanced release than some.

Drink within about five years, with roast chicken, scallops or a lightly spiced Thai dish. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees.
