Domaine Pierre Gaillard Condrieu 2022

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Condrieu is drawn from four terraced parcels of Viognier on decomposing granite across the appellation and its neighbouring communes.

Condrieu is the Northern Rhône’s Viognier appellation, a run of steep granite terraces on the west bank south of Vienne where the variety produces some of the most aromatic dry whites in France. Pierre Gaillard, based at Malleval, draws this wine from four sites: Côte Bellay, Les Patasses at Malleval, Boissey at Chavanay and La Caille in Condrieu itself. All sit on fine, decomposing granite, the soil that gives Condrieu its combination of perfume and drive. Yields here run at about 30 hl/ha, and the wine spends seven months in oak, of which ten per cent is new. What marks Gaillard’s whites is the way intense aromatics and a ripe, hedonistic texture sit alongside genuine mineral refreshment, and this is a textbook example: richly textured, with honeysuckle and macerated peach, buoyancy and a long, stony finish.

Best drunk in its first three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, scallops or a mild Thai curry.
