Description
Domaine Pierre Gaillard's Condrieu is a Viognier from Malleval, the village where Pierre Gaillard cleared and planted his first terraces in 1981.
Condrieu is a small appellation on the right bank of the northern Rhône, just south of Côte-Rôtie, given over entirely to Viognier. Its steep terraces are worked by hand, yields are low, and the wines are among the most distinctive whites in France: aromatic, broad in texture and relatively low in acidity. Pierre and Pascale Gaillard arrived at Malleval in 1981 and built a holding of some twenty-five hectares by hand on the sector's most abrupt hillsides, looking out over the Pilat regional park. The domaine now works across six northern Rhône appellations - Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Péray - and Pierre's three children work alongside him. The schist-based soils here hold water through dry spells, which matters for a variety that has to be picked ripe if it is to smell of anything at all, and the Condrieu is drawn from the terraced parcels around the village.
Drink within about five years, with roast chicken, scallops or a mildly spiced Asian dish. Serve at 10-12°C.
