Domaine Pierre Gaillard Condrieu 375ml 2023

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Condrieu, in a 375ml half bottle, is drawn from four terraced parcels of Viognier on decomposing granite.

Condrieu is the northern Rhône appellation given over entirely to Viognier, grown on steep terraces of decomposed granite above the river south of Vienne. Pierre Gaillard is one of the growers who helped revive the region from the 1980s, and his Condrieu comes from four sites: Côte Bellay, Les Patasses at Malleval, Boissey at Chavanay and La Caille in Condrieu itself. All share the same fine, crumbling granite soils, which give the variety aromatic intensity without heaviness. The wine spent seven months in oak, of which 10% was new, enough to build texture while leaving the fruit clear. The house style pairs the ripe, hedonistic weight Viognier can offer with a bright mineral line, and this bottling shows both, with honeysuckle and stone fruit character and a stony, perfumed close.

Condrieu is best drunk young, within three or four years, and the half bottle suits that; serve with roast pork, apricot-glazed chicken or Asian spice at 10-12°C.
