Description
Domaine Pierre Gaillard's Côte-Rôtie is a co-fermentation of 90% Syrah with 10% Viognier from schist and gneiss parcels around Ampuis.
Côte-Rôtie is the northernmost red appellation of the Rhône, worked on steep terraces above the river, and it is one of the few places where a white variety may legally be fermented alongside the red. Gaillard draws on the schist soils of Fongeant and Viallière at Ampuis, together with a parcel on gneiss at Semons in the south of the appellation. The whole crop is picked by hand with a strict selection of bunches and berries. The fruit is completely destemmed and given a five-day pre-fermentation soak, then worked with regular punch-downs. Ageing runs to eighteen months in barrique, 35% of it new, and the wine is bottled without filtration. Pierre Gaillard has been building the domaine since the 1980s and now farms across several northern Rhône appellations from Malleval.
Seductive young but built to age, it will repay ten years; serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, game or peppered beef.
