Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie is a hand-harvested Syrah co-fermented with Viognier, offered here in a half bottle.

Côte-Rôtie occupies the steep terraces above Ampuis at the northern end of the Rhône, where Syrah is grown on schist and gneiss and may be co-fermented with a small share of Viognier. Pierre Gaillard began building his holdings here in the 1980s, when many of the terraces were still abandoned, and the domaine now farms across several sectors. This bottling is 90 per cent Syrah with 10 per cent Viognier, drawn from the schist soils of Fongeant and Viallière at Ampuis together with a parcel on gneiss at Semons in the south of the appellation. The fruit was hand-harvested with a strict selection of bunches and berries, then fully destemmed. Vinification began with a five-day pre-fermentation soak followed by regular punch-downs, and the wine spent eighteen months in barrique, half of it new, before being bottled unfiltered. The style is precocious and free-flowing, with a perfumed palate, gleaming freshness, seamless tannin and a fine weave of silky fruit.

Approachable early and good for a decade or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck breast or grilled mushrooms.
