Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie Rose Pourpre 2019

Rose Pourpre comes from a single steep hectare of forty-year-old Syrah on the schist of Côte Rozier, in the heart of Côte-Rôtie's Côte Brune.

Côte-Rôtie occupies the terraced slopes above Ampuis at the northern tip of the Rhône, where Syrah is planted on gradients too steep for machinery. The Côte Brune, with its iron-rich schist, gives the darker and firmer wines of the appellation. This warm, amphitheatre-shaped parcel sits just below the famous La Landonne and is criss-crossed with the dry stone walls the area is known for, which hold heat and magnify an already sunny microclimate; that is much of the reason for the depth and structure of the wines from this terroir. Pierre Gaillard harvests by hand and destems the fruit entirely before crushing. Ageing runs to 18 months in new Allier and Nevers barrels, which a wine of this concentration is able to absorb. It is traditionally the most brooding and palate-staining of the domaine's Côte-Rôties.

Give it five years or more for the oak to settle; serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, venison or a well-aged hard cheese.
