Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie Rose Pourpre 2020

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie Rose Pourpre comes from a single steep hectare of schist in Côte Rozier, at the heart of the Côte Brune.

Côte-Rôtie divides loosely into the Côte Brune, with its iron-rich schist and firmer wines, and the lighter, gneiss-based Côte Blonde. Rose Pourpre, purple rose, comes from a particularly steep one-hectare parcel of forty-year-old vines rooted in the schist of Côte Rozier, a warm, amphitheatre-shaped site sitting just below the famous La Landonne. The numerous stone walls that hold the terraces in place are well known for retaining heat, magnifying an already sunny microclimate, and that is central to understanding the depth and structure of the wines from this terroir. Pierre Gaillard harvests by hand and destems the fruit entirely before crushing. The wine was aged for eighteen months in Allier and Nevers barrels, all of them new, which a wine of this concentration absorbs without difficulty. Traditionally the most palate-staining and brooding of Gaillard's Côte-Rôties, it is compact and layered with dark berry fruit, spice and mineral nuance.

Best from around five years after vintage and good for fifteen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast venison, braised beef or a peppered ribeye.
