Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Pierre Gaillard's Saint-Joseph draws on parcels in the high country of Malleval, Chavanay and Limony at the northern end of the appellation, bottled here in magnum.

Saint-Joseph runs along the right bank of the northern Rhône for around fifty kilometres, and its northern end lies closer to Vienne and Condrieu than to Tournon-sur-Rhône. Gaillard's sites are steep and cool with a high proportion of granite, which gives the wine its mineral cut and its perfume. Spreading the holding across several altitudes and aspects provides blending options and accounts for the consistency of the bottling from one year to the next. Each parcel is destemmed and vinified apart, ageing runs about eighteen months mostly in used Allier and Nevers barrels, and the wine is bottled unfiltered. The style is sleek and fragrant rather than heavy, close enough in build to fine Pinot Noir that the comparison is often made, and the magnum will slow its development.

Immediately engaging but a magnum has the structure for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck or a peppercorn steak.
