Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge 1.5L MAGNUM 2021

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge is a granite-grown northern Rhône Syrah from the high northern end of the appellation, in magnum.

Saint-Joseph runs for some 50 kilometres along the right bank of the Rhône, and its northern sector around Malleval, Chavanay and Limony sits closer to Vienne and Condrieu than to Tournon-sur-Rhône in the south. Gaillard draws this wine from several parcels in that high country, on steep, cool granitic soils that give the mineral cut behind the perfume. The spread of altitudes and aspects also gives him blending options, which is a large part of why the wine is so consistent from year to year. As usual each parcel was destemmed and vinified separately. Ageing was mostly in used Allier and Nevers barrels for 18 months, and the wine was bottled unfiltered, so the oak sits in the background rather than shaping the fruit.

Approachable on release and will hold five years or more, particularly in magnum. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, peppered steak or grilled sausages.
