Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Doux Mauzac Roux 2021

Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Doux Mauzac Roux is a semi-sweet white from one of the seven members of the Mauzac family the estate has preserved.

Gaillac, north-east of Toulouse, is among the oldest vineyard areas in France and holds a remarkable collection of local varieties. The Plageoles family has spent decades rescuing them, and Mauzac Roux is one of seven distinct Mauzacs they farm. The grapes are picked in three passes through the vines, and in strong botrytis years roughly half the crop comes from botrytis-affected fruit; whatever the conditions, yields sit around 25 hectolitres per hectare of fragrant golden juice. At 80 g/L residual sugar this is the driest of the estate's sweet wines and the only one fermented and matured exclusively in cement tanks, with no oak at all. Farming is organic. The style is honeyed and tangy with citrus marmalade, silky in texture but cut by crisp acidity and notable clarity of flavour.

Drinking well now and holding for a decade; serve at 8–10°C with pears poached in white wine, fruit tarts or a mild blue cheese.
