Domaine Ponsot Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée du Pinson 2023

Domaine Ponsot Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée du Pinson is declassified Morey-Saint-Denis village fruit from a recently replanted parcel.

Pinson is French for chaffinch, continuing the domaine's habit of naming cuvées after birds. This is the first Bourgogne rouge Ponsot has shipped to Australia, and it exists only because a parcel of Morey village vines was replanted in 2021. Young vines cannot carry the village name under the domaine's own standards, so the fruit is declassified to Bourgogne, which means the wine is village material at a considerably more modest appellation. The winemaking follows the house pattern: gentle extraction, ageing in well-used barrels and bottling without heavy handling, so the emphasis falls on perfume and drinkability rather than structure. Morey sits between Gevrey and Chambolle on the Côte de Nuits, and the wine reflects that middle ground, with bright red fruit and fine, unforced tannins.

Drink over the next three to five years. Serve at 16°C, or lightly chilled, with roast chicken, charcuterie or a mushroom tart.
