Domaine Ponsot Grand Cru Chapelle-Chambertin 2023

Domaine Ponsot Grand Cru Chapelle-Chambertin comes from a single 0.47-hectare parcel in the Gémeaux lieu-dit, bordering Griotte-Chambertin.

Chapelle-Chambertin is one of the nine Grands Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, lying on the flat below Clos de Bèze, and it is among the more perfumed and finer-boned of the group. Domaine Ponsot, based in Morey-Saint-Denis, has bottled this wine since 1970. The parcel sits in the Gémeaux lieu-dit next to Griotte-Chambertin, and was replanted in 1990. The soils here are particularly poor and rocky, which is generally read as the reason the wines show such minerality and hold so well in bottle. Ponsot has adjusted its approach in recent years, giving the cuvée a longer time on skins but with gentler extraction, which has brought more perfume and finer tannins. Ageing runs to eighteen months in oak barrels averaging twenty years of age, and the wine is bottled unfiltered.

Worth five to fifteen years in the cellar and best decanted if opened young. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, game birds or beef with mushrooms.
