Description
Domaine Ponsot is the largest landowner in Clos de la Roche, and this old-vine bottling in magnum is the estate's flagship.
Clos de la Roche is the largest of the Morey-Saint-Denis grands crus, and Ponsot's holding sits almost entirely within the historic Clos itself, with vines averaging around sixty years of age. The appellation was expanded in the 1950s to take in neighbouring sites such as Les Fremières, Les Genevrières, Les Mochamps and Monts Luisants, and the original terroir gives a noticeably different wine from the land added around it. The domaine owns close to three hectares of the original 4.5-hectare Clos, widely held to be the finest part of the appellation, with the remainder of its holding in the Monts Luisants lieu-dit, higher up the slope on the same soil, which has always been bottled as Clos de la Roche and is said to add freshness to the power of the Clos fruit.
A wine for the cellar that will repay fifteen years or more, and the magnum format will slow it further; serve at 16-18°C with roast game, beef Wellington or aged Époisses.
