Description
This 1.5-litre magnum of Domaine Ponsot's Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes comes from the largest holding in the grand cru, with vines averaging some 65 years of age.
Clos de la Roche sits above the village of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits. The appellation was enlarged in the 1950s to take in neighbouring sites such as Les Fremières, Les Genevrières, Les Mochamps and Monts Luisants, but the original walled clos of roughly 4.5 hectares is still regarded as its heart, and Ponsot owns close to three hectares of it. The remainder of the domaine's holding lies in the Monts Luisants lieu-dit, which shares the same soil but sits higher on the slope and has always been bottled as Clos de la Roche; that fruit brings lift and freshness to the depth of the original clos. The magnum format slows maturation, which suits a wine already made for patience.
Worth cellaring for a decade or more before opening; serve at 16-18°C alongside roast game birds, beef with mushrooms or a plate of aged comté.
