Domaine Ponsot's Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes is the estate's emblematic red Burgundy, bottled here in magnum.

Clos de la Roche is the largest of the four Grand Crus of Morey-Saint-Denis, lying mid-slope on lean, clayey ground with limestone scree over a base of Premeaux and Comblanchien limestone. Domaine Ponsot, founded in 1872 and since 2017 owned solely by Rose-Marie Ponsot after her brother Laurent left to set up on his own, holds about 3.2 hectares of it, by some way the largest share, worked as several parcels with an average vine age of around sixty-five years; it was from these vines that Jean-Marie Ponsot supplied the mother plants for Burgundy's first clonal selections. The house picks among the latest in the Côte de Nuits, destems, ferments with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled wooden vats and ages the wine some eighteen months in barrels averaging twenty years old, with no new oak at all. Around ten thousand bottles are made in a normal year, a small part of that in magnum.

The magnum format slows everything down: give it a decade and expect far longer, and serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, game birds or aged hard cheese.
