Description
Domaine Ponsot Corton-Charlemagne is drawn from two parcels on the Aloxe side of the hill and has only been made at the domaine since 2009.
Corton-Charlemagne is the great white grand cru of the Côte de Beaune, wrapping around the upper slopes of the hill of Corton across the communes of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny, on marl and limestone that give a wine of unusual power and longevity. Ponsot is a Morey-Saint-Denis domaine and a comparatively recent arrival here: the first Corton-Charlemagne was produced in 2009. The fruit comes from two parcels, both in Aloxe, one on the Pernand border in the lieu-dit Le Charlemagne and the second in Les Languettes, closer to the middle of the hill. The house style, applied here as elsewhere, avoids new oak and heavy handling, letting the density of the site come through as deep, layered and openly expressive rather than tightly wound.
Broachable at five years and best from eight to fifteen. Serve at 10-12°C with roast poulet de Bresse, lobster or a well-aged comté.
