Description
Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes comes from the premier cru section of Monts Luisants, ploughed by horse.
Monts Luisants is an unusual vineyard in that it spans village, premier cru and Grand Cru land, with its upper portion now falling within Clos de la Roche. Ponsot's premier cru holding sits on white oolitic limestone with vines between twenty-three and thirty years old, and the parcel is worked with a horse. The name distinguishes the red from the estate's white Clos des Monts Luisants; an alouette is a lark. Historically this has been a deep, slow-unwinding Morey that turns vivid and Chambolle-like after about ten years in bottle, though warmer seasons have made it more open in youth than it once was. Bordering Gevrey-Chambertin, it retains something of that village's structure. Ageing follows house practice, in old barrels, with bottling unfiltered.
Drinkable at four or five years and capable of much longer, it suits roast duck, mushroom risotto or a soft washed-rind cheese. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
