Description
Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis Cuvée des Grives is a single-vineyard village wine from the very top of the Morey slope, first harvested in 1872.
A grive is a thrush, and this is one of the founding wines of the Ponsot family. It comes from a 0.35-hectare plot directly behind the domaine's Petit Château, in the village-designated section of Monts Luisants, immediately above the Premier Cru part of the same climat. The altitude is 350 metres, which is roughly 150 metres higher than most village vineyards in the Côte, and the soil is extremely rocky, covered in Comblanchien limestone scree. Shade and cool air drainage from the forest above exert a strong influence, so ripening is long and slow. The upshot is a highly perfumed, red-fruited and mineral Pinot with a distinctly cool, forest-floor character. The wine matured for fourteen months in old barrels averaging twenty years of age.
Better after several years in bottle, so decant if serving young. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, mushroom risotto or charcuterie.
