Description
Domaine Ponsot Saint-Romain Cuvée de la Mésange is a white from a stony, high-lying valley vineyard behind Auxey-Duresses, made by a domaine far better known for red Morey-Saint-Denis.
Saint-Romain sits in a side valley of the Côte de Beaune, higher and cooler than its neighbours, on rugged limestone-rich ground that has historically produced lean, mineral whites at friendly prices. Ponsot's source vineyard is typical of that terroir, but the wine is not typical of the appellation: it has a texture, complexity and generosity rarely seen from Saint-Romain. A mésange is a small songbird, and the name follows the domaine's habit of giving its cuvées bird names. Vinified now with more solids in the juice, which adds weight and a savoury edge, the result reads closer to a generous style of Chablis or to Corton than to the usual taut Saint-Romain. It is a useful reminder that the appellation rewards growers who take it seriously.
Drinking now and worth holding three to six years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled snapper or a gruyère tart.
