Description
Domaine René Rostaing Condrieu 'La Bonnette' is a Viognier from Condrieu, the small northern Rhône appellation that is the variety's ancestral home.
Condrieu runs along the right bank of the Rhône south of Vienne, a narrow ribbon of terraces cut into granite so steep that everything is done by hand and the retaining walls need constant rebuilding. Viognier is the only permitted grape, and the appellation came close to vanishing altogether in the middle of the last century, reduced to a handful of hectares before a revival that has since made it one of France's most sought-after whites. René Rostaing made his name a little further south at Ampuis in Côte-Rôtie, taking on the vineyards of two celebrated growers, Albert Dervieux-Thaïze and Marius Gentaz-Dervieux, when they retired; his son Pierre runs the domaine today.
Serve at around eleven degrees, not too cold, with scallops, roast chicken or richer fish. It is a wine to enjoy in its first years rather than one for long keeping.
