Description
Domaine René Rostaing Côte-Rôti 'Ampodium' is the domaine's principal Côte-Rôtie, a Syrah drawn from parcels across the most dramatic slope in the northern Rhône.
Ampodium is the Roman name for Ampuis, the village at the foot of the Côte-Rôtie hill, and the wine is assembled from a number of separate lieux-dits along the appellation rather than from any single site. The slopes here are among the steepest planted anywhere in France, terraced and held up by dry-stone walls, worked without machinery. Syrah is the appellation's grape, though the rules permit a small proportion of Viognier to be co-fermented with it. René Rostaing began with a single hectare in 1971 and later took over the holdings of his father-in-law Albert Dervieux-Thaïze and of Marius Gentaz-Dervieux, two of the appellation's most respected traditionalists; Pierre Rostaing now runs the estate.
Decant and serve at around seventeen degrees with roast lamb, beef or game birds; it rewards a decade or more in the cellar.
